My Mom would the first one to tell you that the family green thumb skipped over her entirely. Her family comes from a pretty long line of farmers and devoted gardeners.
This was by profession and also by necessity. Mom’s parents had to feed their growing family on very little money, and grandma worked hard to raise as many vegetables as she could. Otherwise, come winter, there would be nothing for her daughters to eat. Grandma also loved her flowers, and she was especially fond of flowers grown from bulbs. Outdoors, this included tulips and her favorite daffodils. Inside, it meant amaryllis.
Which brings me back to my Mom, who may not have felt she had a green thumb, but who enjoyed beautiful amaryllis around the holidays every year. I don’t know if Grandma gave them to her, or someone else, or if she treated herself, but I remember those big red, showy flowers every year.
When I got older, and started a family of my own, my Mom gave me an Amaryllis one year. It’s also had big, gorgeous red flowers, and I treasured it for many years. I can’t remember what became of it, and why I don’t have it anymore, but when Longfield Gardens asked me if I would mind being a part of their celebrations this holiday season, I was very glad to join them.
My amaryllis gift pack just arrived, and I can’t wait to get it put together, so that it can get growing.
And Longfield Gardens is doing two very special things for the readers of my blog this holiday season.

I’d like to keep it for myself, but I know how much my mother would like it also, so I would probably give it to her.
What a lovely memory, so nice to have that connection with our Grandma and Mom.
This would certainly brighten up my New England winter.
I enjoyed mine in February this year, a kit for $1 on the bargain table at Ace. 🙂
As much as I’d like to keep it, I’d gift it.
I would love to grow this for winter color indoors….thanks for this wonderful giveaway Donalyn!
I love forcing bulbs in the Winter. Adds such a bright note to my home.
I would give it our friends. The husband has always been blind, but the wife, who now hase Alzheimer’s, has always loved and cherished flowers.
I would probably give it to my mother in law, who is in her late 80’s and experiencing a lot of health problems once the blooms started to open – it would make her apartment more cheery.
I enjoyed the story and I love Amaryllis too!
